Patient Experiences:
Brian MacNeill, 38,
United Kingdom
Cerebellar Hereditary Ataxia (SCA1)
Check out Brian’s video on Vimeo here.
Reason for Seeking Treatment: Ataxia is a hereditary disease. Brian’s immediate and extended family is especially hard hit by ataxia – the disease has claimed 30 of his family members in the past 150 years. Brian came to China twice for adult stem cell transplants, once in 2006 and again in 2007.
Treatment During Brian’s First Visit: One IV and three spinal umbilical cord stem cell transplants accompanied by acupuncture, wave and physical therapy.
Condition After First Treatment: Brian’s speech improved considerably the day after his second stem cell transplant and after his first spinal transplant. His feeling of “nervousness and shakiness had completely gone and [his] energy levels had increased dramatically.” He also noticed significant improvements in his balance. Upon returning home, he could kick a ball around with his son again.
-After 1 Year Back Home, Brian Returned to China for a Second Round of Stem Cells-
Treatment During Brian’s Second Visit: Two IVs and four spinal umbilical cord stem cell transplants. No physical therapy.
Condition After Second Treatment: Brian chose to forego physical therapy, against doctors’ recommendations, during his second visit because he felt that he was already living an active lifestyle and hoped he would see improvement regardless. Brian quickly saw his voice improve and “the little bit of nervousness and shaking had gone again. My energy levels had got a little better, although not as much as the 1st time when I had the therapy.” Read more about Brian here.
Audrey Jones, 75, Great
Britain
Progressive Idiopathic Cerebella Syndrome with Atrophy
Watch Audrey’s Video Here, and watch news coverage of her here.
Reason for Seeking Treatment: As an accomplished author, mayor and newspaper publisher, Audrey is used to an active lifestyle. Over the past decade, she noticed a decline in her balance, ability to walk, energy levels and everyday coordination. Her specialist new of no current treatments, but mentioned that stem cell therapy offered hope for the next generation. Audrey’s daughter took it upon herself to research what solutions stem cells could offer today.
Before Treatment: In the winter of 2007, Audrey’s condition had deteriorated to the point that she was wheelchair-bound and could not walk unassisted.
Audrey’s Treatment: In January, 2008 Audrey started her three IV and three spinal umbilical cord stem cell transplants accompanied by acupuncture, wave and physical therapy.
Condition After Treatment: Increased muscle control in the legs gave the patient a considerably steadier and more fluent walk - specifically, her feet were closer together and toes pointed forward. By the second treatment, she could climb a short staircase independently. The length of time she could maintain prolonged activity without becoming fatigued increased. As treatment progressed, the patient’s walk improved to the extent that she began to go for walks outside of hospital, accompanied by her husband. Initially the length of time of these walks was between 5-10 minutes but by the end of treatment the time had increased to 25-30 minutes.
Robert Flynn, 49, USA
Ataxia type III (Machado-Joseph Disease)
Watch Robert’s video here.
Reason for Seeking Treatment: Robert’s hereditary ataxia caused gradual deterioration in his quality of life. Tired of the slow decline in his quality of life, and after seeing his brother return from Beike stem cell treatment in China with noticeable improvements, Robert decided to seek treatment for himself.
Before Treatment: In 1993 Robert noticed problems with his balance, later that year he was diagnosed with Machado-Joseph disease. Over the next 14 years his condition gradually declined. In the month before coming to China, his balance was very poor, he was easily fatigued and he could stand only by locking his knees. When his speech began to fail him, he sought Beike’s help.
Audrey’s Treatment: In October, 2007 Robert started his one IV and five spinal umbilical cord stem cell transplants accompanied by acupuncture, wave and physical therapy.
Condition After Treatment: Robert’s condition gradually increased throughout his treatment. His balance and coordination were the most noticeable and useful improvements. He could now shower without using handrails and he could more efficiently perform small-motor tasks like passing objects from one hand to the next. Alex Wallace, 70, Canada
Ataxia
Watch Alex’s video here.
Reason for Seeking Treatment: As a former marathoner, Alex was used to a very active lifestyle. In just one year after his diagnosis, Alex’s quality of life was not up to his standards. He wanted some simple parts of his old life back – walking, chatting, the ability to do simple chores around the house.
Before Treatment: Before treatment, Alex was easily fatigued by walking short distances, rapidly worsening speech. To walk, he had to focus on each step or risk stumbling. Using stairs was problematic. His lack of coordination made small motor tasks very difficult – such as picking a straw out of a drinking glass. His speech sounded “drunk” and he suffered double-vision.
Audrey’s Treatment: In September, 2007 Robert started his five spinal umbilical cord stem cell transplants accompanied by acupuncture, wave and physical therapy.
Condition After Treatment: Alex noticed early improvements in balance, walking and overall energy levels. By the end of his time in China, Alex was walking with nearly the same ease he enjoyed before the onset of ataxia. He could walk forward, backward, on tip-toes and hop without using handrails for support. His children in the US noticed, over the phone, that his slurred speech was improving. Compare videos of Alex walking before and after. “It’s like I turned a new page in my life. I am now able to do all the things I could do before,” Alex stated about his treatment in his exit interview before leaving for home. Read more about Robert and watch more videos of him here.
